TEXAS — A new analysis from moveBuddha, a moving services site, foresees Austin as being the third biggest metro area in the next 77 years. By 2100, the projected population growth could be 22.29 million people, according to the report.

Studying population and migration trends, moveBuddha predicted Dallas-Fort Worth as the largest metro area by 2100, with Houston and Austin following right behind. These three Texas cities are anticipated to oust New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to become the most populous cities in America.

The report approximated Dallas-Fort Worth’s population size at 33.91 million, and Houston at 31.38 million by 2100. “The future of America may lie in Texas,” the author of the report said.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2022 shows Austin as the tenth biggest city in the country, with an estimated population of 974,447. Between 2010 and 2020, the city had the second-fastest growth population rate in the U.S. The total population for the Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown metro area is around 2.3 million. In April, Round Rock was named the No. 1 best place to live in America by Bankrate.

As cities expand, the effects of climate change grow more pronounced, moveBuddha stated. “Like the rest of Texas, Austin will be much hotter by 2100. Along with sweltering temperatures, water scarcity could be an issue.”

This isn’t only a Texas problem though, many other states are in the line of fire as global warming goes into a dangerous territory.

“According to one GDP projection through 2099, over three-quarters of U.S. countries will suffer economically because of climate damage,” the report said. “That could be from everything from heat-related deaths to sea-level rise to increased natural disasters.” However, if Texas got a handle on global warming through adapting new technologies for extreme weather and heat, the state could be “America’s haven.”

As for issues with Texas’ water infrastructure, the city of Austin and others are in the works of developing plans to fix the system. Although a challenge, Texas lawmakers have agreed to spend billions of dollars on new water supply projects and repairs to the infrastructure.
